Wuthering Heights of
Mapleton
Wendy Turton, the creator of the Wuthering Heights of Mapleton event, was inspired by the sight of people dancing, laughing, and smiling in red dresses in a park on the news four years ago. She immediately wanted to experience it for herself.
"In 2021, with the lifting of COVID restrictions and a relocation, I began haunting local op shops for a suitable red dress. I decided to invite a couple of dozen new friends over to join in, then I got scared and hesitated. However, the word had spread, and by Christmas 2022, we were planning for 2023 and 150-200 people. My confidence grew as everyone I spoke to, (I spoke to a lot of people 😄), shared their stories. I realized that the stories I was hearing were the survivor stories, that there was trauma not far away for many, and that everyone was keen to contribute to raise up those who needed help. We chose DV Safe Phone as our first charity as they are local. This linked with the Blackall Range Lions Club through their ongoing mobile phone recycling project.
Music and laughter are crucial to good mental health, so I thought what better time to have a Wuthering Heights Day than July, when there is an increased risk of SADs (Seasonal Affective Disorder). Join us on the 28th July 2024 for a shot of irrepressible joy and a boost to your mental health.
